Brussel Art: Ghent Altarpiece

Today I got to see the Ghent Altarpiece. This painting was so cool to in person. The room where the painting is kept was so dark that the lights made the painting stand out. I liked that because it shows that you should only be admiring the painting and everything else in the room doesn't matter. The panel I want to focus on is the middle panel on the bottom row. On the top middle, the dove (Holy Ghost) is shining lights beam across every one. The sheep (Jesus) is under the lights and everyone is surrounding and looking at it. There are four main groups that all have different background. I believe that shows that Jesus Christ should be in the center of your life no matter your status. This painting is very interesting to look at because no matter where you look at, your eye always go back to the lamb.

I believe that the Ghent Altarpiece is important to Belgium culturally and historically. Culturally, it shows the importance of arts and religion in Belgium. This painting is center around Jesus Christ and represent how he is the lamb of God. For historically importance, it has a deep history of people owning it. It has been moved several times to serval places. This painting was stolen by the Nazi and hidden in salt mines. That shows that this painting is magnificent and many people want to claim it as their own. The Monument Men were determine to restore this painting back no matter the risk involved.

The Ghent Altarpiece contribute to the city status as a cultural capital by showing the importance of art to the city. This painting went through a lot . I mean now the altarpiece protect in this glass container so no one can steal or damage. Belgium wanted to be the owner of this altarpiece. They are proud of this altarpiece. It shows that Belgium would do anything to show their appreciation toward art. Most people recognize Belgium as having the Ghent altarpiece in the country. It shows that art is apart of the cultural and that is will get the appreciation it deserves.

  3. This is a really good blog post! There are a few issues of conventions, so just look out for those.

You make a lot of claims about the dedication of Belgium to the altarpiece. I'm not sure that these are evidences of Belgium's worth as a capital of culture with cultural capital. The value of a cultural capital is generally determined external to the city or area in question and their actions and relationships with the city/area.

I include this only because its the assignment. You're great and I'm so glad you're enjoying the study abroad, you really deserve it
