Paris art: Arc de Triomphe
When I first looked at the Arc de Triomphe, the thing that stood out to me was the placement of this monument. It is in the middle of a round about and of the city. Everything is built around the arc. On the inside of the Arc, the battles that France has won are craved in it. There are also a lot of rooster which is the symbol of france. The scale of the arc makes it look small when you're staring at it across the street but standing right next to it, I notice how talk it actually is. The stature is the front ad back of the arc are also important to the Arc because it symbolizes why Napoleon built the Arc. Mariana is there is help encourage French men to fight for their city and win love.
I believe the Arc de Triomphe is important because Napoleon built for the people of France to remember where they came from. It is a monument of war and a reminder of the battle scar that france had to endure. The location is very important to this monument because Paris is built around it. To me, Napoleon did that to show that Paris is built around their war victories and the people. Napoleon is an example of an ordinary person climbing their way to royalty the unnatural way (not born into it). He found is own way to win the authority of Paris and he became the king for the people instead of the people.
The Arc de Triomphe contribute to Paris's status as being a war machine and also for the people (the middle class). It has all the wars france won and has a memorial of all the forgotten solider. Walking trough it, it hard not be reminded of all that Paris goes through. It also built because of Napoleon who is beloved by the French middle class. He broke the barrier of nobility and showed that you're not stuck in your social class forever. It brought the idea that you can climb you way up the social class. Napoleon made the middle class feel notice in Paris and this arc helped them feel like that.
Another beautiful accomplishment by napoleon. Great essay!
ReplyDeleteHey Audrey! This post will be great for Question 1 on the final where is talks about a monument’s connection to a person in history. The background you gave about France being a strong figure for war is a great contribution for how France is a cultural capital. The government plays a huge role in this, especially during Napoleon’s time. He established dominance with his military power, and most importantly, the people accepted him for it.
