Palais Garnier (Opera House) (4/30/24)

When I entered the Palais Garnier, the first I noticed was the lighting of the place. The grand staircase is lit up by chandelier of bright light and is supported by a small square glass ceiling. The lighting makes the place seem magically and made the painting and sculptures around it stand out. In the grand foyer, the gold on the walls and ceiling helped make the painting stand out. I noticed all the painting are at the top of the walls or on the ceiling and columns/structure of the walls helped directed

I believe that the Palais Garnier is important culturally because it was built of the middle-class of Paris. Napoleon could see that the middle class was riding in status and he had to represent them. Back then Palais were for the nobility so Napoleon wanted to make a Palais for the middle class so they had a place to flaunt their riches. It was a place where the middle class can feel like the nobility. The Palais had many riches in it and it is very easy to wealthy in there. It represent the change from nobility to middle class in showing who is more important in the city of Paris.

I believe it contribute to the city's status as a cultural capital by representing the raise of the stats of middle class. It was built for the middle class so they feel like the are the nobility because they have a Palais for themselves. The Opera brought in wealth and ideas to the city. It was very expensive to build and had people artist contribute to the building. The Palais brought many people of all riches to to the building so they feel like they were important. It was changed the stouts of middle class. The Palais Garnier brought in importance. to the middle class and to art.

  1. Great insights! I think this blog post could help you answer question three of the European Studies section of the final. You could talk about Napoleon’s connection to the building and how it gained its status within the people. You mentioned the art within the opera house and the statues which is a big part of Paris’ culture. People come from all over to see these great works which helps to increase Paris as a cultural capital.

  4. Hey Aubrey! When I visited the Palais Garnier, I also noticed how beautiful it was, especially the grand staircase and foyer with all the fancy gold walls. Did you know Napoleon built it for the middle class to show off their wealth, making them feel like nobility? It made Paris more culturally important by bringing in lots of money and new ideas, showing that everyone, not just the rich, could be part of something special.
